I began learning about how to train dogs several years ago after my wife Heather and I rescued our 2 dogs name Ozzy and Willow, from Many Miles Dog Rescue in Veneta, Oregon. Having no clue on how to train, manage, and stop unwanted behavior, I began searching the web, and You tube for help.
I bought some online self paced basic obedience training online, as training progressed so did the fun, and my relationship I had with my dogs.
As I got deeper into the training, I found HuffmanK9obedience online which offered a 1000 hr. train the trainer program onsite. My wife Heather and I met with Jensen Huffman, owner/ trainer, to talk about the program.
During the meeting, Jensen explained his program consisted of 1000 hrs, of hands on training onsite at his facility, the opportunity to work with several dogs, sizes, breeds, weekly classroom sessions with tests out of a 400 pg Book that students must pass with a 98% grade or higher. During the meeting, Jensen also pointed out that the program, due to how demanding the training is, has a 50% fail rate.
After 20 plus years as working as a paramedic in the city of Portland, Oregon, I was ready to make a career change. Realizing how much fun I was having learning to Train dogs, we met with Jensen several more times to learn and ask more questions about the program.
Having talked it over amongst ourselves, and wanting to move back home to Cottage Grove, Oregon and start over, we decided to sell our house in Portland, move back home to Cottage Grove, and enroll in Jensen's program.
For the next several months, my dog Luka and I, who we also rescued from ManyMilesDogRescue, after having to put Ozzy down for medical issues, would live out of an RV during training, and come home to Cottage Grove on the weekends to do laundry, and meal prep for the following week.
During my training, i leaned how to be a decoy for protection dogs, how to run and maintain a kenned for board and train dogs, and board and maintain for people dropping their dogs off while they are on vacation.
I've worked with hundreds of different breeds, and sizes teaching basic and advanced obedience. I've also leaned behavior modification techniques and techniques on how to properly handle aggressive and reactive dogs.
Fast foreword to the present, after learning and experiencing the above, completion of 1000hrs earning my dog training certificate, I am now opening my own dog training business.
